1. Carbon free computing

One of the VIA Technologies’ideas is to reduce the”carbon footprint” of users the amount of greenhouse gases produced measured in units of carbon dioxide (CO2).Greenhouse gases naturally blanket the earth and are responsible for its more or less stable temperature.
The world has finally taken the first step in reducing emission,The world has finally taken the first step in reducing emissions,The emissions are mainly a result of fossil-fuel-burning power plants VIA aims to offer the world’s first PC  product certifield carbon free taking responsibility for the amounts of CO2 they emit.

2. Solar Computing

Solar Computing initiative is a significant parts of its green computing projects.Solar cells fit VIA’s power efficient silicon , platform,and system technologies and enable the company to develop fully solar-powered devices that are non-polluting silent and highly reliable
Solar cells require very little maintenance throughout their ;lifetime and once initial installation costs  are  covered they provide energy at virtually no cost.

3. Energy efficient computing

A central goal of VIA’s green computing initiative is the development of energy efficen platforms for low power small form,factor (SFF) computing devices In 2005,the company introduced the VIA C7 and VIA C7 processors that have a maximum power consumption of 20W at 2,0GHz an average power consumption of 1W.These energy-efficient processors produce over four times less carbon during their operation and can be efficiently embedded in solar powered devices.
Powering computers using green electricity generated from sources such as solar, wind, bio –fuels ,and others may reduce pollution and greenhouse gases , although improving the efficiency of electrical devices remains more cost effective at present

APPROACH OF GREEN COMPUTING

1. Virtualization

Computer virtualization is the process of running two or mode logical computer system on one set of physical hardware with virtualization a system administrator would combine several physical system into virtual machines on one single, powerful system , thereby unplugging the original hardware and reducing power and cooling consumption

2. Power management
Power management for computer systems are desired for many reasons particularly:
· Prolong battery life for portable and embedded systems.
· Reduce noise
· Reduce operating costs for energy and cooling
· Lower power consumption also means lower heat dissipation, which increases system stability and less energy use, which saves money and reduces the impact on the environment.

3. Displays
LCD monitors typically use a cold cathode fluorescent bulb to provide light for the displays use an array of light-emitting diodes (LED) in place of the fluorescent bulb,which reduces the amount of electricity   used by the  display.

4. Material Recycling
Computer recycling refers to recycling or reuse of a computer or electronic waste. This can include finding another use for the system (i.e donated to charity ) or having the system dismantled in a manner that allows for  the constituent materials for reuse in other products.

CAUSE FOR GREEN COMPUTING

Most of the natural resources are being used to get the electricity, that all have some impacts on the environment.

Creates lots of toxic waste
Most of us are updating our computers, throwing our outdated computer resources, peripherals, and other hardware devices etc, these are the hazardous toxic waste we are producing that really damaging the environment now a days.

Impact of Electricity to the Environment
The Electricity power produces more pollution to the environment. They are Air pollution, Water pollution and Land pollution. Fossil fuel power plants release air pollution and require lot of water. Nuclear power plants release lot of radio active energy sources affecting water and wild life and even hurting the food chain too.
Air pollution impacts on Climate change, Acid rain, Ozone, Air toxics, Water pollution impacts on Consumption of water resources. Polluting water bodies, Land pollution impacts on Degrade and devalue the land, impacting ecosystem and aesthetics.

Impact of toxic waste to the Environment.
The computer crowding our landfills contains lead, mercury, cadmium, beryllium and traces of many other hazardous materials. Incineration, this releases heavy metals like lead, mercury and cadmium into air and ashes. Incirenation, this releases heavy metals like lead, mercury and cadmium into air and ashes.

NEED FOR THE COMPUTING COMPUTING

The following points would clear why should a company promote green, or energy efficient computing.

Climate Change

First and foremost, conclusive research shows that CO2 and other emissions are causing global climate and environmental damage. Preserving the planet is a valid goal because it aims to preserve life. Planets like ours, that supports life, are very rare. None of the planets in our solar system, or in nearby star systems have m-class planets as we know them.

Savings

Green computing can lead to serious cost savings over time. Reductions in energy costs from servers, cooling, and lighting are generating serious savings for many corporations.

Reliability of Power

As energy demands in the world go up, energy supply is declining or flat. Energy efficient systems ensure healthy power.

HISTORY OF GREEN COMPUTING

Our computers uses more energy power, if you realize how much space old computers take up in landfills and how difficult they are to dispose of then you would also appreciate the idea of green computing. Learning a little more about protecting the environment and computer disposal is important.

The solution to green computing is to create an efficient system that implements these factors in an environmental friendly way. A good example would be IT managers purchasing hardware that has been EPEAT approved meaning that maintenance is reduced, the hardware life is extended, and makes recycling the computers easy once it is no longer necessary.

INTRODUCTION

Green computing is the environmentally responsible and eco-friendly use of computers and their resources. In broader terms, it is also defined as the study of designing, manufacturing, and disposing of computing devices in a way that reduces their environmental impact. Many IT manufacturers and vendors are continuously investing in designing energy efficient computing devices, reducing the use of dangerous materials and encouraging the recyclability of digital devices.
Green computing can be defined as environmentally responsible use of your computers and their resources. As 21st century belongs to computers, gizmos and electronic items, energy issues will get a serious ring in the coming days, as the public debate on carbon emissions, global warming and climate change gets hotter.

ABSTRACT

Green computing reduce the use of hazardous materials, maximize energy efficiency during the products lifetime, and promote the recyclability or biodegradability or defunct products and factory waste Green Computing, or green IT, aims to attain economic viability and improve the way computing devices are used. Green IT practices include the development of environmentally sustainable production practices, energy efficient computers and improved disposal and recycling procedures.

In 1992, the US Environmental Protection Agency launched Energy Star, a voluntary labeling program which
is designed to promote and recognize energy efficiency in monitors, climate control equipment, and other
technologies. “Green computing" was probably coined shortly after the Energy Star program began.
Energy management has always been an important topic for laptop manufacturers, who have been working on this for years as they struggled to manage weight versus battery life issues.
